Halloween Fun Facts!!!

Costume parties, scary stories around the bonfire, carving pumpkins & lots of candy – all kids love Halloween for these reasons. But did you know that this holiday traces its origins more than 2000 years back when it marked the beginning of the Celtic New year? Let’s look at some fun facts for this spooky festival
  1. Halloween is the modern form of a 2000 years old Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced as SAH-wen) which was celebrated at the end of summer harvest.
2.  people believed that during Samhain, a door was opened from the underworld and it let the spirits or ghosts into our world so they would put out food and drinks in front of their homes for the spirits and ghosts – this is what evolved into trick-or- treating
3.  Original  trick-or-treaters received mostly fruits and nuts not candy.
4.  The first Jack O’ Lanterns were made out of turnips & not pumpkins
5.  The word witch comes from the old saxton word “wica” meaning “wise one.”
6.  Believing that spirits and ghosts roamed the land on All Hallows' Eve, the ancients Celts wore costumes and masks to avoid detection by these ghosts.  They would often go from house to house enjoying each other’s food and drinks.
7.  Magician Harry Houdini (1847-1926) died on Halloween night.
8.  Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.
  1. Black cats were once believed to be witch's assistants who protected their powers.
10.The name Jack-o'-lantern originated from English folklore. The name refers to the flame of the light which was also known as "will-o'-the-wisp" or "foolish fire"
